Just when I think we have too many toys to begin with, my kids receive another truckload by Christmas Day. So, I’ve developed an easy 3 step guide to declutter toys during the holidays.
Throw away broken toys and toys that are just plain junk.
Step One: Throw away broken toys and toys that are just plain junk. This includes the ones that possibly could be repaired but let’s face it, you’re never going to fix them. You can also use this an opportunity to get rid of the trinkets that came with Happy Meals or were in a birthday party goody bag. You’re welcome!
Pass on toys that aren’t age appropriate or lifestyle appropriate.
Step Two: Pass on toys that aren’t age appropriate or lifestyle appropriate. I am referring to toys that are too advanced for your little ones to enjoy just yet or toys that are meant for a much younger child. I am giving you permission to return it or donate it. This also goes for noisy toys, toys that take up too much room, and toys that shoot projectiles! If you live in a small space or share walls with neighbors like me, these types of toys are not lifestyle appropriate. If you’re worried getting rid of these toys might offend the gift giver, then consider asking them to keep the toy at their house.
Clear out toys that your kids haven’t played with in 12 months.
Step Three: Clear out toys that your kids haven’t played with in 12 months. Think about what toys your kids reached for again and again this year and which toys they barely touched. If there’s a toy they’re likely to want in the future, or they have a younger sibling who might like it in a couple of years, I suggest storing it away in a garage or closet. Then you can re-introduce it months from now and it will feel brand new again.
Complete these steps to make room for all the new gifts and avoid drowning in toys.
