Mom-Somnia! What I Do To Stay Asleep

‘Course, Mikayla is now “sleep-trained” and sleeping through the night and I started waking up on routine, at 2 am and not falling back asleep right away, sometimes not till 4 am. Talk about Mom-somnia! It’s a thing! Even though my body is dead tired at the end of the day, my mind is still going. It was driving me crazy. Here I was, lying in bed pissed at myself for not being able to sleep.

Something had to be done. Here are a few things I did to “sleep train” myself. Doesn’t that sound crazy? But yea, I needed to “relearn” how to fall asleep and stay asleep, sans the wine.

Just like we have a bedtime routine for Mikayla, I had to re-establish a bedtime routine for myself. A bedtime routine signals to your body that it’s time to start settling down and calling it a night.

  • Dim the lights in our room by turning on a bedside table lamp.
  • Hot shower or bath.
  • Keep the bedroom cool.
  • Clean sheets. I love getting into bed when our sheets are fresh, so I try to change our sheets at least every week.
  • Roll on my lavender essential oil from Saje and a spritz of the lavender relaxing mist.
  • Dump all my to-do list thoughts, reminders and alarms into my phone and put it on Do Not Disturb. And that’s it! I try not to reply to texts, or scroll through Instagram or Facebook – sometimes this is impossible, but I try not to when I’m already in bed.

I recently got the roll on essential oil and face mist as a birthday gift from my girlfriend Emily. Both her and my other girlfriend Vicky, uses essential oils religiously. So they got me on it. Since using the lavender oil I’ve been sleeping through the night and going to bed reeeeeelaxed. I love Lavender so it wasn’t hard to get used to.
