Our baby is ONE! We celebrated her birthday with our family and friends… all 80 of them! It was a fiesta! We had tacos, chips and salsa, empanadas, flan, churros, a pinata and the cutest little cactus cupcakes and yummy cake. It’s hard to believe that Mikayla is already one. This was probably the fastest year of my life! Everyone who told us it would go quickly was very right. Time does fly.
We chose Steveston Park because 1) it’s a BIG park which worked great for our BIG family, 2) we’re familiar with the area and it’s a great park for little kids and big kids. 3) There’s a water park!
The tough things about having a party at this park is that it’s first come first serve. We had a game plan for this… the day before the party I dropped off a bunch of stuff at my parents house. They have a truck and live 2 minutes from the park. My dad headed over to the park after church and set up a tent and threw some blankets over a few picnic tables to “reserve” them and unloaded the truck. We headed into Steveston right after breakfast and dropped a sleepy Mikayla off at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Then Chris and I headed to the park to meet my dad and my best friend, Vicky. We set up the rest of the tables and decorations. I bought little succulents to put on the picnic tables to not only “reserve” them for us but to act as a little centrepiece. The pinata we got at party city and I filled it with candy and toys from the dollar store. My uncle made Cornhole boards and I bought the bean bags on Amazon. This game was great for the adults! My mom and brother came an hour before the party to set up all the food. Our family has done enough of these kind of parties that she has food warmers, big trays… pretty much everything you need to entertain.
We ordered churros at the mexican restaurant nearby and my girlfriend, Sarah, made the cake and the cutest little cactus/succulent cupcakes I’ve ever seen! They were beautiful and delicious! I made the highchair skirt out of ripped cloth, string and paper. I bought a yard of each colour and just ripped an inch and a half strips then tied it to some sting which I then taped onto her chair. I made the little banner with some glitter cardstock and green cardstock to spell out ONE. 🙂
After singing happy birthday we gave Mikayla a little cupcake to smash up. She just looked at it and didn’t want to touch it! Haha pretty funny since the girl usually wants to touch everything and put it in her mouth. Chris showed her how to smash it up and that it was okay to eat it. After she had a bit of a taste she ended up loving it. ARRRIBA!
Now that she’s ONE, Mikayla is walking, laughing, always blabbing away about something, she points and says MA MA MAAA when she sees something she wants and she shakes her head “no” if she doesn’t want something. She loves music, dancing and watching TV. She eats all kinds of food. Basically everything that we eat, but we keep it healthy. This was her first time having cake, we got her a carrot cake with cream cheese icing. She loved it!
