Mama, your body is working hard building that little human! Pregnancy does a lot to your body: your feet ache, your legs are sore, your back aches and sleeping can be difficult. I have 2 kids and a few months into my first pregnancy my doctor suggested I get a prenatal massage.
I booked an appointment because these were some of my issues:
- soreness in my legs from some wicked leg cramps,
- shooting pains up my back when I bring my knees up to my chest,
- stiffness and soreness between my shoulder blades,
- just achey muscles in general.
After my first appointment I was HOOKED! I felt rejuvenated, relaxed and armed with some good tips on how to prevent or manage my pain… the leg cramps and the shooting pain. Plus, being a mom of 2, it was amazing to just REST… (I fell asleep a bit during the foot massage).
What is the difference between Prenatal Massage and a Regular Massage?
The main difference is you will be working with a specially trained therapist who will make specific adjustments to their practice to make sure you are comfortable and safe. There are special bolsters and pillows that are placed on the bed to allow you to lay on your stomach. You can place your belly in a divot or hole so that there is no pressure on your baby or belly. If the feeling of laying on your belly makes you nauseous the therapist will have you lay on your side.
Here are some places in Vancouver that I’ve gotten a Prenatal Massage at and enjoyed.
Oceana Massage
As stated on their website… the more rested and relaxed you are, the healthier and enjoyable your pregnancy will be. Oceana Massage is a small studio 119 West Pender Street, Vancouver, BC. I left this massage relaxed and rejuvenated. Because I had an RMT I left with great tips on stretching and caring for the nerves and muscles in my growing body. https://oceanamassage.com/prenatal-massage-vancouver/
Sense, A Rosewood Spa
This is probably the nicest spa I’ve ever been to… It’s located at the Rosewood, Hotel Georgia. When you get there, you’re immediately transported into a very relaxing and tranquil environment. You wait for your therapist in a cozy waiting room with tea and water. And you’re treated to a prenatal massage with aromatherapy oils specially blended for pregnant women. https://www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/hotel-georgia-vancouver/wellness/spa/treatment-menu
The Scandinave Spa, Whistler
This one is outside of Vancouver, but I had to include it because it’s one of my favourite places. You’re still able to book with an RMT who is trained in Prenatal Massage, which is great if you have coverage through your extended health benefits. Similar to Sense at the Hotel Georgia, the moment you step into the Scandinave Spa you know you’re somewhere special. It’s in the middle of the mountains, surrounded by nature. You have access to the hot pools, sun rooms, fire pits and resting pods. Your massage is so relaxing, it’s hard not to fall asleep! It’s an absolute treat going to this spa. https://www.scandinave.com/whistler/en/massages/
Acumamas
I haven’t been to Acumamas but I have heard lots of great things! They work with you to come up with a plan on how to make sure you’re comfortable throughout your pregnancy. On top of their prenatal massages, they also offer acupuncture. I included them on this list because they specialize and are dedicated to women in all stages of Pregnancy and Fertility. https://acumamas.com/massage-therapy/
